Art is of value only to the extent that it speaks to us.
The tea-masters collected only objects which fell strictly
within the measure of their individual appreciation.

The Way of Tea, as practiced
by Sen no Rikyu, removes the distinction between the ordinary and
the extraordinary. I practice painting in this same spirit. It is
the measure of my sensibility. I hope the result falls within the
measure of your individual appreciation.
To the sensitive eye, an inner light emmanates
from a meaningfully painted surface. Viewers bring that light with
them. The artist must strive to reflect that light with painterly
skill in order to create an image which is more truly felt than
seen.
There is a restless energy in light, paradoxically
emanating stillness and silence. Expressing this fact with paint
means portraying the fundamental unity of figure and ground, while
acknowledging its volatility. To me, there is mystery in this; as
if I was putting one foot into another world. This is essentially
a romantic endeavor, in the sense that imagination bears the weight
of truth.
Do these paintings serve your imagination
and sensibility? I invite you to visit the gallery and see.
